About the Cover
Cover picture: Three-dimensional map of the protein translocation channel of the outer membrane of mitochondria (TOM core complex) obtained by electron tomography. The TOM core complex was purified from mitochondria of Neurospora crassa. It consists of the major components Tom40, Tom7, and Tom6, and in addition Tom22, which mediates the passage of preproteins from the receptors to the import channel. The largest diameter of the TOM core complex is roughly 1314 nm, with a height of ~7 nm. The diameters of the two pores measure ~2.1 nm. (top) Horizontal slices through the average volume at a distance of 0.344 nm. (bottom) Isosurface representations of the core complex; top and side view.
