Cover picture: Antibody localization of the JIL-1 kinase on Drosophila polytene chromosomes in females (left) and males (right). JIL-1 localizes to the gene-active interband regions on all chromosomes but is found at almost twofold higher levels on the male X chromosome. The male X chromosome is characterized by an altered chromatin structure thought to promote higher levels of X-linked gene expression in order to achieve proper dosage compensation.
