A homologue of the algal intraflagellar transport (IFT) protein IFT57 (blue) is found at both ends of the cilium (red) that connects inner and outer segments of vertebrate photoreceptors. Defects in IFT proteins lead to a loss of photoreceptor structure. See page 103.
